ABOUT US
Climate Collective Oxford is working to set up a community climate hub in a central location in Oxford. It will be a welcoming and thriving space for individuals, groups and businesses that want to create a better and more sustainable Oxfordshire.
These are some of the things that we envisage could happen in the hub that could help people to live and work more sustainably.
-
Find out about how to save energy while keeping bills low and homes warm and free from damp
-
Find ways to shop that are better for you and the planet: come to a baby toy and clothes library and borrow rather than buy; learn how to mend your clothes, or join a repair cafe for household goods
-
Access talks, workshops and exhibitions: a busy calendar of events organised by local community groups
-
Meeting spaces for groups at low cost: the opportunity to create change alongside others
-
We also hope to have a cafe, a library of books and materials about nature and the climate, displays and much more!
Oxford’s community climate hub will be a space to imagine and create a future that works for generations to come. It will be a space for everyone to build relationships across our diverse communities, businesses, organisations and sectors. Together we will shape a city where people and nature can thrive.
CLIMATE COLLECTIVE OXFORD'S STORY
On 29 January 2019, Oxford City Council declared a Climate Emergency. It was also the first in the county to hold a Citizens’ Assembly on Climate Change. A key finding of this was “a demand for more education and information provided for the wider public in Oxford to help them understand what they can personally do to help”.
Climate Collective Oxford was set up to address this gap in July 2023, with the aim of establishing a climate centre, inspired by other hubs springing up around the country. In October 2023 Oxford City Council unanimously passed a motion to support establishing a climate hub in the heart of the city. This was backed up by a well-attended public meeting. Although recent years have brought huge challenges around the cost of living, these impacts have not lessened people’s concern about climate change and nature loss. See Climate Outreach research here, and the Climate Citizens report from Lancaster University here. Climate Collective Oxford wants to help translate people’s well-founded concerns into informed, collaborative action. An important part of this will be to highlight how often acting for climate can help our communities and ourselves - and vice versa! Everything we do as Climate Collective Oxford is rooted in our values of care - for ourselves, for each other, and for the planet.
This video from our friends at Zero, the climate hub in Guildford, shows more about what a centre can do.
