WHO WE ARE

Climate Collective Oxford is run by a small Steering Group of volunteers:

Teresa Garlake

TERESA GARLAKE

I have always loved nature and being outdoors. Being part of Climate Collective Oxford has allowed me to combine involvement in community activities with my deep concern about the climate and ecological crisis that we face. I have a background working as a writer in the not-for-profit sector and teaching. I also love art, camping, and spending time with friends.

I have been aware of the damage we are doing to our beautiful world for 40 years.  But over the past 10 years I have seen how the pressure on the resources of our planet has been worsening and becoming even more unsustainable. Supporting various national and local climate-focused groups and signing petitions was not cutting through and making the change we need fast enough.  I found that I need to be proactive and work with local groups, supporting each other, to make change happen. In the past I have worked in international development managing large project contracting, logistics, budgeting and finance, and also managing premises, facilities and IT

I'd been aware of the problem of climate change for some time, but I really became concerned about it after having children, and desperately wanting to make sure they have a decent planet to grow up on. Working towards this, with others who care about nature and the environment, is incredibly rewarding, and I look forward to welcoming more and more people into Climate Collective Oxford as our capacity and reach increase. Before becoming a full-time parent, I worked in academia and publishing, and I now contribute to various community and environmental groups.

In 2019, I was fortunate to have been randomly picked to participate in the Oxford City Council Citizen's Assembly on Climate. It really opened my eyes to the challenges we face, while at the same time showed me how communities of people can rally together around a common cause. It was after that experience that I really started to get interested in the climate and nature crises, and thinking about how to live a more sustainable life. So much so, that I decided to study the MSc Green Economy alongside my day job in educational publishing. I'm particularly interested in supporting people to understand and learn about climate change and how we can all play a small but significant part in making Oxford a more sustainable place to live. I love spending time outside, especially when camping, canoeing and kayaking.

Climate Collective Oxford also has many supporters and volunteers, including:

MEGAN

I am an English teacher and climate educator working with a range of organisations including Oxford Earth Academy, with whom I co-convene the Oxford Schools Sustainability Network - giving local secondary students access to quality speakers and projects on climate and nature, and to peer networks. A local community climate hub would be a great space to connect students from different schools with each other and with the vibrant range of other climate-related activities and initiatives within Oxford.

I am the social media volunteer for Climate Collective Oxford. As someone born and raised in Oxford, I grew up seeing how many amazing community projects the city has. I want to help realise a community hub like Climate Collective Oxford - which brings together issues of climate and social justice - so that stronger connections between local groups and communities can be made. I currently live in London where I am a full-time PhD student, but this remote volunteering role allows me to stay connected to my hometown, combining my work experience as a social media manager and my passion for climate justice. In my spare time I love visiting art galleries and singing in my band.
